What Makes University of Maryland Medical Center Different?
What separates UMMC's heart program from other hospitals? Why do people travel from around the world to receive their heart surgeries in Baltimore, Maryland?
World-Class Cardiac Surgeons
Our cardiac surgeons specialize in and some cases have helped pioneer minimally invasive procedures, which require only several small incisions vs. the big incisions of
traditional or open heart surgeries. These advances include robotic assisted heart bypass surgery. Our surgeons have performed more than more than 300 robot-assisted operations, and are the first in the world to perform to perform triple bypass surgery using the da Vinci robot.
Hybrid Innovations
Although every hospital is looking for new ways to improve its patient's care, not every hospital wins awards for doing so. UMMC's hybrid coronary intervention has been recognized as an "Innovation of the Year" award winner for allowing cardiac surgeons and interventional cardiologists to cooperate and perform both stenting and bypasses in a single operation. With quicker recovery times and improved chances for long-term success, UMMC’s hybrid intervention and minimally invasive robot-assisted heart surgery are just two ways that the medical center is pioneering heart treatment and improving the lives of patients around the world.
Success Stories
At the end of the day, the proof can be seen in the lives of our patients. From Charles Pugh, who was looking for the "best in the field" to Pearl Walker, who benefited from UMMC’s unique hybrid surgery, there is no shortage of success stories at the Maryland Heart Center.
Nationally Recognized Heart Center
The Maryland Heart Center is widely recognized as a top heart program in the country, landing in both Thomson Reuters and US News's top cardiovascular programs in 2008. With innovations in totally endoscopic minimally invasive coronary artery bypass and keyhole surgeries using robotic assistance, UMMC continues to set itself apart from other institutions.
